Crash in Illinois allegedly due to drunk driving

A local man was arrested after he crashed his vehicle on May 16. Illinois police report the man was crossing a bridge when he lost control of his car. They have reason to believe drunk driving was the cause of the accident.

According to police reports, the 68-year-old Illinois resident was traveling southbound on a county road when he crossed the center line and struck a guard rail while heading over a bridge. Police responded to the accident and allege the man was intoxicated at the time of the crash. They arrested him and charged him with driving under the influence. He was further cited for failing to reduce speed in order to avoid an accident, and driving in the wrong lane.

The man was taken to a local county jail, where he posted bond and was released. Illinois law dictates a court date will be mandated, though there has been no word as to when that date might be. It is also uncertain whether the man has had his license revoked or other censures applied.

When someone is pulled over or otherwise investigated under suspicion of drunk driving, Illinois police are required to follow very specific steps to ensure the accuracy of their determination. This can include, but is not limited to, a Breathalyzer or roadside sobriety test. However, if all steps are not followed to the letter, and if the driver's rights are not fully observed throughout the process, it is possible for the case to be thrown out of court. Anyone charged with drunk driving may benefit greatly from learning more about their rights in a roadside situation.
