Drug charge filed against Illinois man

A man from Quincy has been charged with conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine, according to local law enforcement. The Illinois man was arrested and hit with the drug charge, along with several others, on June 24. He is currently in police custody awaiting trial.

Police say the man, a 34-year-old with a history of drug charges, was under surveillance when he was allegedly seen taking possession of materials and precursors commonly used to manufacture methamphetamines. He was arrested and charged with conspiracy to manufacture and unlawful possession of materials and precursors. Additional arrests may also be pending according to Illinois law enforcement.

The accused man has a storied history, which police have been quick to report. He has previously been charged with a variety of crimes, many of them drug-related. He is also wanted in another state on a charge unrelated to the class X felony for which he is currently in custody.

No matter what a person's past might suggest, Illinois and federal law require every accused person to have their day in court. It will be up to the prosecution to prove that the materials the man was allegedly seen collecting were indeed intended for use in producing an illicit substance, which is the basis for the existing drug charge. A solid defense may benefit from analysis of the details of the arrest to ensure the man's rights were observed throughout the process. Plea bargaining options may also be addressed by defense counsel to provide a means for the accused individual to make an informed decision regarding how to proceed in their own best interests.
