Illinois woman faces armed robbery charges

Following a short chase, officers with the Pana Police Department apprehended a woman they believe robbed a convenience store on Jan. 2 around 12:37 a.m. According to reports, a woman entered Casey's General Store on West Second Street, pulled out a knife and demanded the clerk hand her money before fleeing.

The clerk on duty at the time of the incident told the police that the perpetrator of the alleged robbery had red hair and was wearing a black hat and blue hoodie at the time of the robbery. The amount of money taken in the reported robbery was not disclosed.

After responding to the area, police reportedly noticed a vehicle driving near the scene. When they attempted to pull over the vehicle, sources say the officers witnessed a woman matching the clerk's description jump out of the car in the 300 block of South State Street. There is no word on whether the car's driver was arrested or questioned in relation to the alleged robbery. Investigators say they recovered a knife and money from the 26-year-old woman, and she is now facing a charge of armed robbery. The investigation is ongoing.

Those who are facing criminal charges should be aware of the constitutional rights they have when they are accused of a crime. People may not be forced to self-incriminate themselves, and thus, they may assert a right to remain silence. In the event that a suspect asserts his or her rights, officers may not attempt to interrogate them or to continue to question them following the assertion. Criminal defendants also have the right to be represented by a criminal defense attorney, and they may request to speak with an attorney when they are charged with a crime.
