2 Illinois women facing drug charges after traffic violations

On Behalf of | Oct 15, 2014 | Drug Charges

On Oct. 4, Illinois police officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was carrying two female occupants for multiple traffic violations. The police alleged that, while they were taking the two individuals into custody, one woman attacked one of the officers.

The vehicle was stopped at a Walmart in Herrin at approximately 8:50 a.m. During the stop, they allegedly discovered that the 25-year-old driver was operating the vehicle on a suspended license. They claim that the female passenger, who was sitting in the backseat, had heroin in her possession.

Both women were detained and taken to the Herrin Police Department for booking. While they were in the process of being booked, the 25-year-old woman was reportedly unhandcuffed so that she could visit the restroom. At that point, she then allegedly attacked an officer. She was subdued and transported to a hospital prior to being taken to a nearby jail.

The 25-year-old woman was ultimately charged for being in possession of drug paraphernalia, a controlled substance and hypodermic needles in addition to other offenses, including aggravated battery. The 30-year-old woman was also charged for possessing hypodermic needles, a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

The penalties for a conviction on drug possession charges or other criminal offenses could include a prison sentence and expensive fines depending upon the circumstances of the case. If the incident is an accused person’s first offense, an attorney might be able to mitigate the consequences of a drug conviction by negotiating a sentence that involves participation in a rehabilitation program. This may reduce any potential jail time that the person might face.
