NFL player charged with a DUI

Illinois NFL fans might be interested in learning that Michael Floyd, who is considered to be among the top three wide receivers on the roster of the Arizona Cardinals, was charged with two counts of DUI at 2:48 a.m. on Dec. 12, several hours after the Miami Dolphins beat the Cardinals 26-23.

Law enforcement officers in Scottsdale reportedly found Floyd sleeping behind the wheel of his car that was running. Officers took him into custody on suspicion of DUI, blocking the roadway and failing to obey the orders of a law enforcement officer.

Floyd is set to become a free agent at the end of 2016 when his contract with the Cardinals expires. He was the 13th player chosen in the first round of the draft in 2012. He has a prior DUI conviction that happened in March 2011 when he was attending the University of Notre Dame. In addition to criminal penalties, Floyd is also facing a two-game suspension by the NFL if he is convicted of the DUI offenses.

Drunk driving may result in harsh penalties when people are convicted of the offense. Those who are charged might want to consult with a criminal defense attorney who has experience with these types of cases. There are a variety of defense strategies that might be employed and which will depend upon the facts of the particular situation. In some cases, a challenge could be mounted to the initial traffic stop itself as being made without the required reasonable suspicion on the part of the officer who conducted it. If successful, it could result in a dismissal of the charges.
