Two men arrested in cocaine bust

On Nov. 2, two Illinois men were arrested on drug and weapons offenses following a police search. One of the men attempted to eat his drug stash when approached by police.

According to local media reports, officers from the Carpentersville Police Department executed a search warrant at a home on the 1000 block of Chippewa Circle. Inside, they encountered the 51-year-old male owner of the home and a 30-year-old man. They also allegedly found between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine that the homeowner planned to sell, 25 hydrocodone pills and a stolen 9mm handgun.

As officers entered the house, the homeowner tried to consume the cocaine, and he refused to cooperate once taken into custody. He was later charged with six felonies, including armed violence, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, obstruction of justice and unlawful use of a weapon. He was also slapped with misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owners Identification card. Meanwhile, the 30-year-old man, who lives on the 1200 block of Navajo Circle, was charged with possession of a firearm while on parole. Both defendants were taken to the Kane County jail for processing and held on $750,000 bail.

If convicted, defendants facing drug charges could be sentenced to years in prison and assessed heavy fines. However, a criminal defense attorney may be able to help someone avoid conviction or obtain a lighter sentence. For example, if police violated a defendant's rights during search and seizure, the case could be thrown out of court. It may also be possible to negotiate a plea deal that reduces the charges and penalties.
