NFL wide receiver charged with marijuana possession

On Behalf of | Jan 20, 2017 | Drug Charges

Illinois football fans may be interested in learning that Geronimo Allison, the wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, was charged with marijuana possession in December. The charge resulted from a traffic stop in early September.

The 22-year-old NFL player was driving on Interstate 43 when authorities pulled him over for speeding on Sept. 4. Authorities clocked his rental car going 81 miles per hour, which was 11 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. When the Wisconsin State Patrol trooper approached the car, he allegedly smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Allison denied that he had been smoking marijuana and claimed that the smell was left over from the night before when he had been with others who had been smoking.

When the trooper searched the vehicle, he allegedly found three cigars, two of which tested positive for THC. Allison was taken into custody and was initially issued a citation for speeding and later charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. A spokesperson for the NFL stated that the league was aware of Allison’s charges. However, the NFL does not take action until legal matters are resolved.

If a person is facing drug charges, he or she could potentially lose his or her job, become unemployable or even be kicked out of school in addition to other consequences. A criminal law attorney may create a strong defense against the charges. If the authorities alleged that they found illegal substances during a vehicle search, a lawyer may argue that there wasn’t probable cause to pull the vehicle over in the first place, resulting in an illegal traffic stop. Tests that were run on any suspicious substances may also be faulty. If this is the case, an attorney may be able to have the charges dropped against the accused person.
