Woman charged with DUI after car accident

On Behalf of | Mar 30, 2017 | Drunk Driving-DUI Charges

An Illinois woman who attempted to flee from authorities on March 17 was charged with DUI and a number of other offenses following a two-vehicle crash. The incident occurred at about 4:56 p.m. near the Route 53 and 135th Street intersection in Romeoville.

Immediately following the accident, both vehicles pulled into a gas station nearby while they waited for the authorities to get to the scene. While they were waiting, the other driver noticed that the 49-year-old woman may have been under the influence. When an officer did arrive, he attempted to conduct a field sobriety test on the woman. She then attempted to flee from the scene, though the officer caught up with her. A scuffle ensued during which the woman attempted to bite the officer’s gloved hand.

The woman was then taken into custody on multiple charges, including aggravated battery, DUI, resisting an officer, being a pedestrian while under the influence and failing to reduce speed to prevent a car accident. The woman was being held on a $30,000 bond.

A person who has been issued drunk driving charges could potentially be facing a jail sentence. A criminal law attorney may act immediately to prevent the person’s driver’s license from being suspended. The attorney may also investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident during which the person was accused of DUI. In some cases, a challenge to the evidence could be mounted, including the results of the breathalyzer tests. In some cases, such as when it is a first offense, the defense attorney could strike a deal with the prosecutor that would provide for a reduced penalty such as alcohol awareness classes and community service.
